Apple phases out iPad 3, iPad with Retina Display takes over its slot

Here’s good news for you iPad 3 owners out there. Your iPad is now a collector’s item! No joke!

Just months after its Philippine debut, the iPad 3 is now phased out. Yep, phased out! Ouch!

Don’t panic, though. There are still one’s available in local stores, but none are being sold anymore directly from Apple. The only iPad available at the Philippine Apple Online Store is the iPad 2, and it’s now only available in one variant, 16GB.

And in cased you missed it, there’s a new Retina Display iPad on the block. It still looks every bit the same as the iPad 3 but with a speedy new processor (A6X vs A5X on the iPad 3) running under the hood. Oh, and lest I forget, this now also sports the new standard Lightning connector for iOS devices. So that’s better performance but less compatibility with accessories readily available now in the market.

With the announcement of the iPad with Retina Display – notice the new naming scheme there – the big question now is for aspiring iPad owners, do you go for the readily available (but extinct) new iPad (aka iPad 3) or wait for the iPad with Retina Display (or what I like to call the iPad 3S) to become available locally?

For me, I’d go with the newest iPad, the one with the Retina Display in its name. The Lightning connector maybe a sour note in its spec sheet, but that’s the future as far as iOS devices go. And to be honest, I don’t really that many accessories dependent on the old connector dock to bothered by the adoption of a new port standard.

How about you guys? Will you still go for the now phased out iPad 3 or wait for this new iPad to arrive in the Philippines?

iPad 3 owner here. Though at first, I may have felt a bit betrayed, I later accepted it and was just grateful for the fact that I bought my iPad 3 last June. It has been a very useful companion for me, and since neither shape nor function was changed in the newest version, I am definitely not going to trade my iPad 3 for the new one.
