Aviiq Portable Laptop Stand review

The Aviiq Portable Laptop Stand is a unique, origami-like take on the laptop stand. The result is a thin, light, ultraportable yet sturdy accessory for your laptop.

Today’s laptops have processors that run faster and cooler compared to those of just a few years ago, but laptop stands still come in handy for those who prefer to type on an inclined keyboard, or push their laptops to the max with photo or video editing chores that make the fans spin like crazy and wish for better ventilation.

The Aviiq portable laptop stand improves upon the traditional laptop stand in form while retaining the same functions. When you open the long, elegant black box it come in, you find a thin, aluminum-sheathed plastic stand folded like a fan. When opened up, the dimensions are roughly those of a piece of long bond paper (but a bit wider), with two grooves at the top that let you fold the top part into a small triangle that acts as a base. Two tabs lock the base into place.

Though it looks uncomfortably thin when opened up, it’s surprisingly stable. Aviiq’s Portable Laptop Stand doesn’t bend or creak, even under the weight of my 13-inch MacBook Pro. Aviiq claims you can use it with laptops up to 17 inches, and I don’t doubt them.

Two rubber-coated tabs at the bottom keep your laptop from sliding off. Your laptop is tilted at a 12° angle (a bit steeper than what I’m used to but no less comfortable for long spells of typing), and keeps the bottom of your laptop elevated a few millimeters from the surface of the stand.

A laptop stand is a laptop stand, but the Aviiq offers uniqueness (you’re likely to get discreet stares as you pull it out and fold it into place in a coffee shop), excellent portability (it packs flat, and sits like a fat plastic ruler in your bag or laptop case), and great build quality (even, brushed aluminum panels, smooth edges). Oh, it can also be used to rap someone’s knuckles or smack a would-be bag snatcher on the face.

The Aviiq Portable Laptop Stand’s Apple-esque price and packaging makes the target market obvious: the person who walks into a store, picks out a laptop, and pays. No canvassing, no haggling. For Php2,990 you get a functional laptop stand that is the perfect complement to your Apple laptop well because of its elegant, minimalist design, ease of use and, of course, price tag.
