Cheapest i7 Laptop (Review): NEO B5700 N, NEO B5702

The NEO B5700 N is the cheapest i7 Core-based laptop in the country today. A quad-core machine for just thirty grand. And we had it in our hands! Here’s the rundown.

For two glorious weeks I used the NEO B5700 N. Currently the NEO B5700 N is considered the cheapest laptop in the market to have the i7 processor. Yes, you read that right. The NEO B5700 N is a quad-core laptop that can be yours for about one-third the price of a 15-inch 2.0 GHz MacBook Pro. This has got to be one of my most memorable gadget reviews to ever take part of. This also happens to be my first laptop review.

The NEO B5700 N also has a big sister (or brother?) in the form of the NEO B5702. The difference between the two? The NEO B5702 has a higher price, bigger memory, bigger hard drive space, and an operating system.

So let’s dig in to this laptop review and find out why I got so enamored with the a NEO B5700 N.

The price is right!

I couldn’t believe that the price of the NEO B5700 N was only 27,999 pesos (30,999 pesos if you charge it to your credit card)! I can safely say without a doubt that this is the cheapest laptop I’ve ever seen in its category.

Meanwhile, you can also get the NEO B5702 for 31,999 pesos (34,999 pesos if you decide to swipe that credit card instead). Still, not a bad price considering what you’ll be getting.

So, what are you getting?

On the left of the NEO B5700 N i7 you can see several ports: two USB, HDMI, VGA. You can see the LAN port there too as well as the power socket.

On the right of the NEO B5700 N i7 you can see the headphone and microphone jacks, an e-SATA port, a 7-in-1 card reader and the DVDRW SuperMulti slimtype drive.

The NEO B5700 N doesn’t really come with an operating system, although the people at NEO were kind enough to install Windows 7 in the unit they gave me for this laptop review.

If you don’t want to go through the hassle of installing an operating system, get the NEO B5702, which comes with Windows 7 32-bit Home Basic installed. That’s not all. The NEO B5702 also comes with 4 GB of RAM and 640 GB hard drive. Everything else is the same as the NEO B5700 N.

Editor’s note: It will be a shame though if you don’t go 64-bit with this quad-core i7 laptop. So Technoodling’s advice: Upgrade to 64-bit Windows 7 while you’re at it. Check with your dealer for upgrade deals.

The NEO B5700 N i7 laptop also has four memory slots. It’s possible for you to fill that up with as many 2- or 4-GB DDR3 memory sticks, giving you anywhere between 8 to 16 GB of RAM. Of course, if you decide to go beyond 8 GB of RAM, you’ll need a 64-bit operating system installed. 32-bit operating systems can only handle a maximum of 8 GB RAM.

Caveat: the NEO B5700 N is NOT a laptop for gamers. At least, for those who play graphics-intensive stuff. As you can see, the graphics card is just the usual Intel HD Graphics 3000. I wasn’t able to test this for video editing. I should have though. I mean, come on! It’s a quad-core laptop!

What do I like?

I love the screen! The NEO B5700 N and the NEO B5702 i7 laptops both have a 14-inch LED screen. They also come with surround sound that’s just crisp and clear. Nevertheless, I wouldn’t let go of my external laptop speakers just yet.

The build quality is quite solid. The looks aren’t as fetching as that of a MacBook Pro, but it’s nice enough that you can proudly show it off in a coffee shop.

Both the NEO B5700 N and the NEO B5702 have 6-cell Smart Li-On batteries. I was surprised that the laptop lasted between three-and-a-half to four hours! The i7 laptop also doesn’t get hot when I use it. It was actually comfortably warm while I was using it on my bare lap for four hours. Even then, it’s still not an excuse for men to do so unless you don’t want to have kids.

I like the feel of the keyboard on the NEO B5700 N. It was quite responsive to my touch! Although our fearless editor Art begged to differ. Hmm.

The touch pad was quite responsive too! I also found out, just a few hours before I needed to return the NEO B5700 N, that it happened to be a multi-touch pad. Let’s just say it was a happy accident.

But was I really happy happy joy joy about the laptop?

There are two things I didn’t like about the NEO B5700 N i7 laptop that I reviewed. Minor stuff, really.

At first I thought that the touch pad of the NEO B5700 N didn’t have a scrolling section. It was something my old NEO netbook had. I found out by accident when I realized that I had two fingers on the pad at the same time. Ah! Multi-touch! Use two fingers together to scroll vertically or horizontally. You can even pinch to zoom. But take heed! Using multi-touch isn’t as responsive or as easy as using just one finger. The scrolling and zooming isn’t smooth. I ended up using the arrow keys instead for scrolling and hotkeys for zooming.

So yeah, it’s a moot point now that I know it scrolls after all.

The other thing minor thing is that the shell of the NEO B5700 N is so shiny. Yup! You guessed it. It’s a thumbprint magnet. If you’re at least semi-OC like me, better bring along a microfiber cloth to wipe those prints away.

So there you have it! The NEO B5700 N and NEO B5702 are two really cheap Core i7 quad-core laptops that are really great bangs for the buck. If you’re in the market for a quad-core i7 laptop that won’t break the bank much, this is definitely a good deal!

Thanks to this review, I started doing pinch-to-zoom gestures on my basic Windows laptop and voila! Apparently, I also have a multitouch trackpad!

And that’s also a very tempting laptop. How is the weight? It looks bulky from the side shots. And would you say 2GB of RAM is enough to enjoy it already since it has an i7 processor anyway?

grabe halos kasing presyo ng iPAD… good review as always :)

I always thought the maximum for 32-bit OS was 4GB?

    • @dakilang_waiter I’m a developer and a sometime linux user, so I’d say you can never have too much RAM. 2GB is ok for the normal user. But for someone like me, I’d want to boost that up as much as possible so I can run a web applications server. :D
Weight is ok. A little over 2kilos. Not bulky in my opinion.

    • Guys, kindly help me! I was about to buy new laptop that is best for gaming my budget is about 28k but actually I’ll not use it for gaming it’s for Computer Aided purposes (Auto-Cad) Photoshop, Google Sketch-up and the like which need a high video card (1gb up) and high end graphics. What do you suggest set aside the brand what matter is the specs. Thanks in advanced. :y

I think a 32-bit windows OS can only detect almost 3Gb (although theoretically it can up to 4Gb), if you will use windows 7 x86, there is a hack that will let you use up to 4Gb RAM. But if you have a memory of atleast 3Gb, I think it would be better to go for a X64 windows OS to maximize your RAM ^_^

      just an opinion ^_^
