No no no, not Chrome as in Google’s popular browser.
I’m talking about the use of chrome as a style choice for still quite a few phones out there.
Seriously, chrome is dead. And I’m talking in particular about chrome paint that’s topped onto obviously plastic parts.
Bottom line: it looks tacky, it looks awful once the scratches come in, and it eventually fades out, exposing the dull gray plastic truth underneath.
I can tolerate real chrome plating on metal bodies. But plastic with chrome paint? Yech.
The biggest offenders of this fashion faux pas are Nokia and Blackberry. Their products are just peppered with plastic trims galore. Case in point: the new Lumia 610. Just because you’re shiny doesn’t mean that you’re fashion royalty.
Samsung occasionally comes out with plastic chrome stuff too, but not to the same degree. And almost everyone comes out with chromed plastic buttons.
But the fashion czar of the tech world, Apple, is notably allergic to chromed plastic. And that’s why they’re the fashion czar of the tech world.
So to all you tech manufacturers out there. Please. Enough already with the fake chrome. Forget about it. Bury it. Kill it. It’s not an aesthetically pleasing accoutrement. It’s an eyesore.
