Crumpler Gypsy Moth Flight review

Crumpler isn’t really known as a lady’s bag brand but, once in a while, they do come out with a special bag for the fairer gender, and one such bag is the one we got for you today – the Crumpler Gypsy Moth Flight.

Two things caught my attention instantly with the Gypsy Moth Flight – (1) it’s got a very feminine design, which is a rarity for Crumpler, and (2) it’s actually deceptively light, an adjective that doesn’t usually go hand-in-hand with a Crumpler laptop bag.

That last bit about it being lighter than the average Crumpler laptop bag is thanks to the Gypsy Moth’s hybrid outer shell – the upper being made of soft waxed canvas and the bottom clad in the durable waterproof material that Crumpler’s known for. Result: you get a bag that’s easy to tote around but is still tough as nails (not literally, of course).

And it’s pretty spacious too. That is, if you don’t jam a 15-inch lappy into it, which, surprisingly, is somewhat tricky to do considering that it’s rated to fit such a laptop. It took me several attempts to properly load my 15-inch MacBook Pro into it.

That, however, isn’t to say you can’t pack anything more into the Gypsy Moth Flight when you’re toting around a 15-incher. In fact, we – my preggy wife and I, to be more specific –  still managed to jam a lot of stuff into the Gyspsy Moth Flight with room to spare for additional goodies as shown below.

The loot outside the bag: 200ml Human Nature sanitizer, wallet, pencil case, hair brush, Combos baked snacks (1.7oz), X-mini II capsule speaker and charger, iPod touch, medicines, 50ml Human Nature hand sanitizer, Moniegold chewy tamarind candy (150grams), 470ml Lock & Lock food container (with Skyflakes), baby wipes, kikay pouch, 250ml Victoria’s Secret body mist, lanyard with various USB drives, rosary, 15-inch Macbook Pro and sleeve

In the main storage space, you’ve got your 15-inch padded compartment separating it from your other things, as well as a decently-sized side pocket to safekeep all your other small stuff (i.e. wallet, USB drives, sanitizer, etc) There’s also a semi- secret pocket outside, perfect for often-used items, such as your mobile phone, tissue, candy, and what have you.

Clockwise (from top left): the inside pocket, the semi-secret pocket outside the  main compartment, the Gypsy Moth Flight’s main storage space

If you load a smaller laptop or just an iPad into the Gypsy Moth Flight, you’ll definitely be able to cram in more goodies into it.

Fully stuffed, however, it’s not exactly the easiest bag to lug around. This is where the bundled 38mm soft twill shoulder strap will come in handy. Once attached, this oversized hand/shoulder bag instantly converts it into a pseudo-messenger bag. Neat, right?

Bottomline

Price will always be an issue with Crumpler bags, and it’s no different with the Gypsy Moth Flight. It’s a whole lot pricier than the average laptop bag but, then again, this certainly isn’t your run-off-the-mill laptop bag. And you know what they say, you get what you pay for, and you’re definitely getting your money’s worth with the Gypsy Moth Flight.

LIKES:
  • Feminine design
  • Pretty light for a Crumpler bag
  • Bundled with a shoulder strap to convert it to a pseudo-messenger bag
DISLIKES:
  • Pricey (but aren’t the really good stuff always pricey?)
  • Not available in other colors

Price: Php5,990
