En garde, Apple! Google sharpens its swords at the I/O developers conference

Ya think the boys and girls at Google listen to the Foo Fighters? “Don’t the best of them bleed it out, while the rest of them peter out…”

Because these people don’t seem to be taking Apple’s new ascendancy sitting down. They’re digging in their heels, girding up their loins and rolling up their sleeves, and will have a whole bunch of nice things to show the world at the I/O developers conference in just a few hours.

So what can we expect from the software giant? Gizmodo thinks that the following may see the light of day:

  • The next version of Android, “Ice Cream Sandwich”, which may be the happy combination of Gingerbread and Honeycomb. A new Nexus handset and/or even a Nexus tablet may be the first device/s running this new build.
  • Google’s long-awaited streaming-music player (which may be named “Music Beta by Google”). This is to be a direct competitor for the Amazon Cloud Player. It may run on Flash and might hold as many as 20,000 songs for free.
  • A refresh to Google TV to jump-start its lackluster performance thus far. Expect Google to drop in support for Android applications to try and boost consumer interest.
  • The commercial version of Chrome OS, as well as Google’s hardware partners. Most likely these will be Acer and Samsung.

Everything sounds like it makes sense – but you never know. Google might decide to drop in a surprise or three a la Apple and its (in)famous “one more thing” end-of-the-show announcements.

It’s a war out there, and things are just getting started!
