Geek Diary: What Howard recommends this week

What do we Technoodling editors do in our spare time? We look for new gadgets and electronic toys to play with, of course! Sure, there are way too many gadgets out there to play with. Fortunately, after years of experience, we kinda have an eye for how to separate the winners from the losers.

So here’s my pick of the winning gadgets/toys for this week.

FitBit Zip – becoming healthier one step at a time

This nifty little gadget is a modern marvel. A glorified pedometer at its core, the FitBit Zip is officially tagged as being an activity monitor. Once clipped on your pants pocket, the FitBit Zip counts the steps you made all throughout the day and then gives you an estimate of the amount of calories that you’ve burned. The FitBit Zip can be used in conjunction with an iOS or Android device as it can connect to your smartphone via Bluetooth and then display all of the relevant data via the FitBit application.

Quite useful for someone like me who’s trying to shed a few pounds. I’ll most likely do a review of this sometime soon.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown – busting alien heads with style

A literal blast from the past. XCOM: Enemy Unknown is the remake of the cult favorite alien extermination game that a lot of gamers were hooked onto way back in the nineties. I remember doing numerous all-nighters playing this game; it’s definitely one of the best games ever created. When a remake was announced, gamers all over were skeptical, but Firaxis (the guys behind Civilization) blew everyone out of the water by rebuilding this classic game and making it modern while still staying true to what made the original such a phenomenal hit.

It was only this week that I finished the game and, by golly, I’ll be playing it again. It is THAT good.

SOUNDFREAQ Sound Rise - Sounds to wake you up by

It may not be the first alarm clock/iPod dock combo speaker to hit the market, but it is probably one of the best. SOUNDFREAQ has been steadily making a name for itself in the personal audio scene, and the Sound Rise is another product that they can be proud of. Vertical in design, the SOUNDFREAQ Sound Rise doesn’t take up much space. It actually looks right at home on a bedside table. It has an alarm clock, plays music though the iPod connector, and comes with Bluetooth plus a 3.5 mm connector.

Howard

Gadgets and video games are what Howard loves and he was fortunate enough to have dabbled in both worlds professionally. A former Editor-in-Chief of a local gaming magazine, Howard is currently busy jumping from one industry to another, analyzing and writing about all of the electronic toys he loves. His favorite noodles: Pork Leg Bihon.
