iPad 2 launched, and recent iPad buyers release a collective sigh of regret

The biggest surprise at Apple’s March 2 event was actually not the iPad 2 (did anyone really expect anything else?) but Steve Jobs’ appearance as the main presenter. He looked healthier (or at least put on a bit more weight, based on the photos), and put to rest talk of his losing weight rapidly and being at death’s door.

The iPad 2 comes with the new, dual-core A5 chip, and front and rear-facing cameras. And just like the iPhone 4, it will come in black and white. The new iPad will be available in the US on March 11, and then roll out in 26 other countries by March 25. Sadly, the Philippines is not on that list, and neither are Hong Kong and Singapore. Those who can’t wait to get their hands on one will have to source it from the US or some European country (maybe Finland or Hungary or Iceland?)
Here’s a quick list of what was announced:

  • iPad 2: thinner (thinner than the iPhone 4!), lighter (1.3 pounds vs the original iPad’s 1.5 pounds), comes in black and white. Same price points as the original.
  • A5 chip: dual core, faster CPU, better graphics (1080p video out, via the new dock connector to HDMI adapter), battery life still at 10 hours
  • Front and rear-facing cameras: FaceTime calls, rear camera records HD video
  • Photobooth, iMovie, and Gargeband for iPad
  • Smart Covers: Wakes the iPad when you open it, puts it to sleep when you close it, and doubles as a stand, comes in many colors
  • iOS 4.3: Improved Safari, AirPlay features. Available March 11.

Are the improvement enough for a first-gen iPad owner to upgrade? At least Vic thinks so. Read his and the other TN editors’ comments on the new iPad  (yep, we stayed up for the launch) here. Watch Apple’s new iPad video here.

I’m not that impressed with the changes they made with this one. It’s sort of the same feeling I got when the 2G iPod touch was unveiled: looks nice, but after the initial ‘wow’ factor wore off, the minor upgrades weren’t to convince me in get it.

I’ll gladly wait for the iPad 3, and see what that baby has to offer. Hopefully, it’ll be as groundbreaking as the iPhone 4 :)

Wonder when this will be released here.

      • No official word from Apple, but I’m hoping it’s sooner than December, which is when the original iPad became officially available in local outlets. If I were to make a guess, June or July. iPhone 5 to be announced in June, then available in August. But that’s just my guess.
