“iPhone 5? Meh. New iPods? Huwaw!”

Maybe it’s because nearly all the iPhone 5 details had leaked out well before the press event that the actual announcement was anticlimactic. And maybe it’s because hardly any site had guessed what the iPod touch and nano upgrades would be. So, most of us are more excited about the new iPods instead of the new iPhone.

Okay. Cards on the table. I’m biased because I own a Samsung Galaxy S3 and no matter how open minded I am, there will still be part of me that wants to justify the phone I’m currently using. So take my niggles with a grain of salt.

First off, the S3 (and many other phones) having a removable battery trumps the still-sealed iPhone, especially for heavy users. Also, the adoption of the new Lightning proprietary connector makes me shake my head in disbelief – literally every other device I own can be charged with a micro or mini USB cable, except for those from Apple. And now, another standard? Oh, don’t forget expandable memory…

And finally, what I feel to be a misstep on Apple’s part: by telegraphing the virtues and features of iOS 6 well in advance of the iPhone launch, they deprived themselves of a lot of “wow” factor that would have helped make a bigger impact at yesterday’s event. As a result, it became all about the hardware, and while it IS gorgeous, top of the line, stunningly designed hardware, it didn’t deliver quite the knockout punch that everyone is used to seeing from an Apple event.

As for the iPod touch: pair that with my S3 in hotspot mode and I’ve got the best of both worlds. Gimme!

As a non-iPhone user, here’s what I am liking about the new iPhone: very light, and very slim. And that’s it. The larger display? It’s just (finally) playing catch-up to the hordes of huge Android devices out there.

In other words, I agree Jason. It’s not like the Jobs launches of old. Polite applause rather than the old enthusiastic raves. I’m worried that all those anti-Apple anti-fanboys will start chanting that this is a sure sign that Apple, without Jobs, is on its way to a decline. I won’t go that far, but I do hope that Apple comes out with something rave-worthy soon. Much of their brand value is depending on that.

On the other hand, the new iPod and nano did catch me by surprise, mainly because with all the hype about the iPhone and the iPad, I totally forgot that these devices existed! Thing is, I think of them more as accessories than as devices on their own. That sounds weird. Hard to explain. But… yeah, that.

I still think Samsung had a better showing than Apple, the stuff Sammy showed off at IFA are the what techie-geek dreams are made off. Saying that, I’m still going to get an iPhone 5 and the new iPod Touch. Why? Because I honestly believe the new iPhone 5 is worth the upgrade from the 4S. Plus, we’re already getting of a bunch of iPhone 5 cases and accessories so I’ll be needing the iPhone 5 for review purposes as well. The iPod Touch will be for my kid, he’s going to have a blast playing games on the new iPod Touch.

Coming from an iPhone 4…heck yeah! It’s got the best of the iPhone 4S and is housed in an all-new body, with a 4-inch display and LTE on the side. So I’ve really got no reason why I shouldn’t upgrade to the iPhone 5, excluding, of course, lack of funds.

But if I were coming from an iPhone 4S, I’d be singing a whole different tune altogether. This is really the big pay-off of being a procrastinator.

As for the oh-so-colorful new iPod touch, I love it! If I won’t be able to afford the iPhone 5, that’s next on my iOS hitlist.

The iPad nano? Nah! Pass! Don’t like the look, and except for FM radio functionality, the iPod touch can provide everything the nano can ever bring to the table and a whole lot more.

I know that Apple will sell a boatload of iPhone 5 units, but there are enough great Android phones out there to choose from for those who don’t like Apple’s particular flavor of Kool-Aid.

There aren’t, however, any serious competitors to the iPod touch. And today’s upgrade made it so much more compelling. Even if you choose the Samsung Galaxy SIII or the HTC One X or stick with your trusty BlackBerry Bold, you’ll still be thinking “Wow, that iPod touch with the 4-inch Retina display and the A5 processor and that great new camera would surely be a good second device!â€

Upgrade? I’m sitting this one out because my 4S is less than a year old, and will wait for the iPhone 5S, or iPhone 6, or whatever Apple will call it. And I’ll be recommending the new iPod touch wholeheartedly to friends who ask me if it’s worth getting.

A lot of friends will be asking “Should I get the new iPhone 5″ or “Should I get the new iPod touch?” We given our 2 cents. What do you guys think?

    • Coming from a 4S, the iPhone 5 is not much of an upgrade. SLIGHTLY bigger display, LTE, what else? (I hate the two tone design by the way, I would have liked it if it had an aluminium unibody build) The 3GS came out with video capture and huge increase in speed; 4 came out with stunning Retina Display, a gorgeous new body, and again huge increase in speed and overall performance; 4S came out with Siri and major improvements under the hood, especially the camera and the processor. The iPhone 5? Naaah. The 4S will still get all the new features of iOS 6 so I’m not considering an upgrade. If I ever plan on ditching my 4S, I’d rather get an S3 or a One X, or maybe the new iPod Touch. HAHA.

Its not just a bigger display and LTE. It has the new A6 processor that Apple claims is up to twice as fast as the A5. (so that counts as a major improvement under the hood doesn’t it?). Early hands on feedback say that the difference in speed between the 4s and the 5 is noticeable on even just the IOS interface. It is taller than the 4s while also being 18% thinner and 20% lighter.
