So the iPhone 5 is now official. Big deal.
The real and most important question is – when will the iPhone 5 become available in the Philippines?
Checking out Apple’s full iPhone 5 press release is of little help in answering this question. There’s no mention of the Philippines there and when it could possibly be released in other countries aside from the ones already mentioned. It does, however, confirm that a Philippine iPhone 5 launch won’t be happening anytime this September.
What’s not stated there, though, that many sites have reported on, including 9to5Mac, is that Apple plans to make the iPhone 5 available in 100 countries on 240 carriers by December 2012. So if we’re lucky, it might just be a merry iPhone 5 Christmas for all of us.
As for local pricing, no idea yet how much Globe and SMART will price the new iPhone. But if the pricing of iPhone 4S in the Philippines is any indication as to what’s coming, SMART most probably will have the better prepaid deals for the iPhone 5.
But yeah, those are two big IFs there.

(1) Several of us got a text from Globe saying the iPhone 5 is coming soon. Christmas doesn’t seem “soon” to me, so maybe it will happen sooner than soon. (2) Smart has better deals on the iPhone? I have to disagree. Their advertising makes it look that way, but upon closer inspection, Smart’s plans are actually more expensive. Borderline misleading, as some of us think those ads were*. Smart will tell you their signal is superior to Globe’s, and Globe will tell you that their customer service is better (it had better damn well be given how sucky their network is at the moment! But that’s true, I left Smart back in 2004 because their CS was awful) but availability is the question here so hopefully it comes along sooner than Christmas, with our Telecom’s 4G networks rolling out to match. *notice the asterix?
