After a seemingly endless wait, the anticipated Siri port for iOS 5 devices has finally arrived. Ladies and geeks, meet Spire, Siri for non-iPhone 4S jailbroken iOS 5 gadgetry (read: iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, 3G iPod touch, 4G iPod touch, iPad, iPad 2* ).
Spire is readily available at Cydia. No need to add a new repo. Just search for Spire as as it is available via Cydia’s default BigBoss repository.
It’s a relatively small download, but upon installation, it’ll also download Siri direct from Apple. This is where it becomes a huge installation. Spire as a whole, including Siri, is a 100MB download. So it’s best to use WiFi when installing to avoid excessive data charges and for a more stable data connection.
Spire is far from perfect though. Since there’s still that bit about Apple servers requiring authentication from an iPhone 4S, you need to by pass this security feature by entering your own proxy server address. If you don’t know anyone who owns an iPhone 4S, this can be a major setback.
But if you do, then feel free to try to give Spire a shot on your jailbroken iOS 5 devices.
Spire, for me, is really a tempting and compelling reason to go back to jailbreaking, but with its current caveats, I’ll have to pass on this one…for now.
