Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation review

If you’re looking for a palm-sweating, gut-wrenching hardcore first person shooter game for your iOS portable gaming rig, you should definitely add Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation to your list of options.

The official game trailer of Modern Combat 3 pretty much sums up this game has to offer – action, action, and more action.

But it’s actually what you don’t see in the trailer that truly made MC3 a winner in my book.

One fine example is the controls for this MC3.

Like most FPS iOS games, you can control player movement via a visible virtual joystick on the left and another the right for aiming. Just tap anywhere to shoot.

But if you’re not comfortable with that set-up, MC3 offers up several other options:

  • visible joystick on the left to move, anywhere to aim, visible trigger button on the right (my preferred choice)
  • anywhere on the left to move, anywhere on the right to aim, visible trigger button on the right
  • or if you want a real challenge, use the gyroscope for aiming

Plus, if the default lay-out doesn’t work for you, you can rearrange it to your liking. Yes, that’s right. You can reposition everything to your liking, and I mean EVERYTHING, from the joysticks to the trigger button, even the pause button and radar that alerts you of nearby enemies can be moved. Neat, right?

And if you think this is purely a run-and-gun game played on the ground, you’re sorely mistaken. One of the levels here takes you to the skies where you’re the gunner onboard an AC-130, playing tactical support for the ones on the ground. I haven’t finished the game yet, so there could be more surprising treats ahead.

Want some hot multiplayer action? Modern Combat 3’s got that too.

You can turn to the world wide web for some intense online action with players from all-over the globe, or create/join one with your friends via local WiFi.

Sounds great! So what’s the catch?

At $6.99 a pop, it’s a tad bit on the expensive side. But hey, if you’re a die-hard FPS iOS gamer, its asking price really won’t be much of an issue.

Next, and prolly another non-issue for some of you guys, is its size. It’s a massive 1.06GB download (iOS version). As such, I highly discourage you from trying to download this direct to your iPad/iPhone over 3G or even via WiFi if you’re just having a quick coffe break at Starbucks.

Bottomline

I think its pretty obvious what my verdict is for Modern Combat 3 is. I like. I really like it. It’s got everything you can expect from a top-rate FPS game, and then some.
