Sometime last week, Google upped a doodle that was a real working Moog synthesizer. Ever since I was a kid, I have always wanted to have my very own Moog synthesizer. It was all these knobs and dials and panels of geeky oscilloscopes and what-nots from the analog era. I loved old analog synthesizers. Remember the Korg and the Prophet 5 from the 80s? The Moog was the big daddy of it all. It was featured quite prominently on the covers of two albums from the 70s that I played quite a lot as a kid: Pink Floyd’s Umma Gumma, and Switched On Bach by Walter (now Wendy) Carlos.
Needless to say, I had quite a bit of fun with the doodle.
Well, that led me to Animoog, an app for the iPad that was made by, whaddaya know, Moog Music itself. And wouldn’t you know it, in honor of founder Bob Moog, the app is just $9.99 until May 29. So yeah, I got it. And then I realized that I don’t even know most of the geeky synth terms in it. All I know are Attack, Decay, Sustain and Release, plus the waveforms such as Sawtooth, Noise and Pulse. Why do I know these? Because I learned these way back in the 80′s thanks to my ancient Commodore 64 computer.
So yeah, that’s me geeking out on music tech without even knowing what I’m getting myself into, heheh.
