Review: Crumpler’s “Rampaging Mob”

Crumpler, the Aussie company that comes out with weird, wacky names for its wonderful set of bags, has come out with another decidedly unique backpack.

It’s called the ‘Rampaging Mob‘, and it’s a large, sturdily built (as usual) bag meant for hardy travel or for getting around with more than your usual gear. It comes in one color, black, and has various zippered and velcro-sealed cargo compartments for you to stuff your gear into.

The one I got for review is meant for a 17″ laptop, which is a little unusual because very few laptops these days get to that size. It would be great for the precious few gargantuan notebooks that Dell, Asus, Acer, HP, MSI and other manufacturers still put out (Apple just phased out their 17-incher), but I don’t actually have such a big desktop replacement, opting for the small and slim kinds of laptops and tablets which are more my size. Still, it would be great if I had one to test with Crumpler’s latest offering.

There’s an internal padded sleeve for a 17″ laptop, with a velcro’ed cover, and various other convenient compartments like an internal A4-sized document or magazine pouch. There’s a zippered, vertical-opening side pocket great for keeping a large water bottle or some other gear, as well as internal velcro-sealed stash pockets with zippered access, and dual internal stuff pockets for loading up your overnight thingies, books or other electronic gear.

There is a wide, fully-adjustable ergonomic harness situated at the back of the backpack, and it comes with a chest belt to evenly distribute the weight of the pack across your shoulders. It also comes with a neoprene neck collar to help prevent chafing and make carrying the pack easier. There is a padded grab handle on top for those times when you don’t want to carry the pack on your back.

If you’re worried carrying all that weight on your back will be hot and bothersome, Crumpler provides Air Mesh padding for that area to keep the air circulating between your back and the bag, and to wick away perspiration. There are also reflectors built into the harness and the front of the bag that are normal and hard to detect in the daytime, but turn very visible at night.

The bag’s outer portion is designed to be water-resistant, and it comes with Crumpler’s usual lifetime warranty. It’s a little pricey for a big backpack, but you get what you pay for.

If you’re in the lookout for a nice, sturdy, no-nonsense bag for your big laptop, look no further than Crumpler’s Rampaging Mob.
