Rumor: 4-inch display for iPhone begins shipping

Will the iPhone ever escape its 3.5-inch touchscreen? Rumors say yes, but let’s face it, rumors are just rumors until proven otherwise.

Well, this new one suggests that the next iPhone will sport a 4-inch display, and it’s all set to be launched in 2012.

According to Japanese blog Macotakara, Sony and Hitachi have both started shipping 4-inch displays to Apple for a “new iOS device.” There’s really no mention of the iPhone anywhere in the post, but there’s no other “new iOS device” that comes to mind that would benefit from a 4-inch touchscreen than the next iteration of the iPhone (aka iPhone 5).

(That is, unless their objective is to make the iPod Touch pretty different from an iPhone as a gaming device.)

Anyway, we’ll see come 2012 what this 4-inch display really is for. iPhone? iPod Touch? And as always, we’ll keep the grains of salt handy…

Hmm. About time the iPhone grew a bit. 3.5in is just too small.
