If there’s something the iPhone 4 has in abundance, it’s the number of 3rd party accessories available to it. Go to any Apple reseller store and you’ll find shelves upon shelves of iPhone 4 cases, screen protectors and pouches available. To say that it can get a tad overwhelming is an understatement.
Speck, one of the leading manufacturers of iPhone and iPod cases, has created a strong presence in our local market. The fact that there’s a huge counterfeit ring selling fake Speck cases in the Greenhills tiangge area is a testament to Speck’s popularity. (Be careful where you buy your Speck cases dudes!)
You mean Speck released a new iPhone 4 case … again!?
Well, yes and no. This “new” case (The CandyShell Flip) is actually a variant of Speck’s best selling CandyShell line of iPhone case. The major change is that now, the bottom third of the case can be flipped open to allow the iPhone 4 to be docked without having to remove the CandyShell case.
Meh! What’s so special about a case with an opening flap?
As mentioned in the previous paragraph, the foldable flap allows for the iPhone 4 to be docked without having to remove the CandyShell Flip case. This is extremely convenient especially if you’re the type of iPhone 4 user who either has a USB iPhone 4 dock or a stereo speaker with an iPhone 4 connector dock. Another advantage of the flap is that it is now easier to insert or remove the iPhone 4.
Ok, you’ve sold me on the flap, but what the hell’s a CandyShell case anyway?
Oh, my bad. I assumed everyone knew about Speck’s CandyShell case. For the uninitiated, Speck’s CandyShell case is technically made up of two parts: a smooth, hard plastic exterior and a rubber mesh interior. The hard plastic exterior allows the case to be easily slid inside a pocket without causing unnecessary friction while the inside rubber mesh serves as a shock absorber to protect the iPhone 4 from bumps and drops. This model, the CandyShell Flip, adds the aforementioned flappable flap.
Just give it to me straight, what makes this case better than the others?
The CandyShell Flip has three things going for it: it’s very attractive, offers ample protection to the iPhone 4 and of course, the flap. There are a couple of major downsides in using this case though; it adds significant bulk to the iPhone 4 and if used haphazardly, the rubber that holds the flap and case together can become chaffed.
All in all, the CandyShell Flip is good enough for the discerning iPhone 4 user to consider, this is definitely Speck’s best case to date.

This is a good review. With all the iPhone 4 cases around, buyers are having a hard time choosing. More reviews of cases that are available locally will be very helpful for sure.
yeah almost everyday newer and newer protectors are released on the market… surely hits the spot on my brain, well i think i gonna check it out… Question how much height could this protector protect the Iphone 4 from falling? Pocket to floor, will your Iphone 4 survived after falling? hahaha
The only downside would be the “bulkiness” of the speck candyshell cases. If you’re an anti-scratch OC person, this is the case for you.
Oh my GOD! such a cool CASE for IPHONE!!!
but why is it so bulky!, it would hard for me to put it in my POcket!
@mque12 as long as you’re not wearing skin tight jeans, it’ll fit in your pocket
because of the constant flipping of the case open or closed, what are the chances of your phone getting scratches?
i dislike the bulkiness but love the colors.. it does come in handy though when youre using the old data cables and this might fit *some* portable speaker systems for iphone. id imagine it would fit in some especially those with the dock so close to the speaker itself. kudos to speck for innovation nontheless.
Cute, but Speck’s Fitted line offers better aesthetics. The CandyShell Flip does seem more convenient, but only if you’re the type of user mentioned in the review.
The flap is definitely a good idea for people who loves to put their devices on the dock (like me!). I have an ipod touch with capdase protector and it always gives me inconvenience on taking the protector off. Now its all tattered on the earphone part because of this.
The candy shell flip is kinda bulky for me but the flip is very convenient to those who sue the dock all the time. no need to remove the case.
Yes! Actually, it is a perfect gift to my friend and cousin. Usually, the protective part itself is the most selling and compelling design of a protector and it will definitely hit the market.
It is not that affordable compared to other designs and brands but a girly thing will make it shine.
Pretty neat for a case
adding more bulkiness is nothing if it still look nice
I want one but before i can get one, i must buy iphone4 first hehe
I like the idea of the flap. Practical. Very good if you dock your phone often.
If abused and used improperly – i think in any phone case, whatever brand, will eventually break.
I totally agree on the catchy apperance.
awesome!!
speck has been one of the popular brand for 3rd party apple protectors. I hope this has enough ventilation so the phone doesn’t heat up too much specially when having long conversations.
This is cool! I would like to have one..Although it’s bulky, it would still fit in my everyday bag! I want! I want!
Awww no red ? Would have considered getting one if it came in red too
The foldable flap is a nice feature. But its bulkiness might deter other consumers from buying it, although it offers significant protection.
I’d be careful with cases with parts that slide against the surface of my phone because they may end up leaving a scratch on the glass face or metal side. Even if the interior were made of rubber that can’t scratch, it can pick up dirt or debris that can.
something I need to get when my iPhone arrives. This should protect my unit on the occasional drops
I love the question and answer thingy, answered all of my questions in mind! And also the Likes & Dislikes, Lastly, the enough information for the consumers so they can decide whethere he/she will buy it or not. Good review!
This is such a good review because the product was actually explained and they took into consideration those people who are not familiar with the product. And i am biased with anything that is branded Speck. I love their products. One thing though, I hope they release a version of this for the ipod touch too. It would cater to more people since a lot of the Filipinos own the new ipod touch (imho). This is actually the first case that i’ve seen that took into consideration the possibility of iphone owners to put their phones in a dock or in a stereo dock. Nice Product!
@aimee Speck just came out with a new case for the iPod Touch, will be reviewing it as well
